Patagonia sues AB InBev for selling beer that displays its name

  • AB InBev had availed a trademark to sell Patagonia beer in the United States in the year 2012
  • Patagonia has accused AB InBev (BUD) of trademark infringement for copying its brand name and aesthetic on its beer bottles

Clothing firm Patagonia has reportedly filed a lawsuit against Budweiser’s parent company alleging that it is selling a beer which resembles its name and evokes Patagonia’s environment-friendly, rugged brand and logo.

As per trusted sources, AB InBev had availed a trademark to sell Patagonia beer in the United States in the year 2012. However, it is being said that the brewer sat on the name until 2018 – the time it began selling beer with the brand name.

According to a report by UPI News, Patagonia has noted in the lawsuit that AB InBev has deliberately attempted to take advantage of the hard-earned reputation of the company which has been built over the last 40 years as an entity dedicated to environmental conservation. The statement further notes that AB InBev has done everything possible to make it appear as if Patagonia company sells the PATAGONIA beer.

Reportedly, an AB InBev spokesperson emailed a short statement to CNN which said that the company will fight the lawsuit. It further stated that AB InBev is aware of the lawsuit and believes it to be without merit and hence the company would strongly defend its trademark rights.

As per reliable sources, Patagonia has accused AB InBev (BUD) of trademark infringement for copying its brand name and aesthetic on its beer bottles. Reportedly, AB’s Patagonia beer packaging displays a silhouette of a mountain and the word Patagonia in bold letters.

For the record, Patagonia claims that their brand was created in the 1960’s and is registered in 90 nations.
